A
Visit by Laura Ingalls Wilder
|

Mrs. Wilder's basket of
memories
|
|
"History and the stories
of courage and strength of faith, spoken by pioneers throughout
history, make our country exciting. We still have pioneers
coming to the United States today. Their struggles are
different, but there is a connection to the early settlers who
moved west. Understanding this connection may help students
accept new settlers who bring different cultures to their
communities. I hope that by portraying Laura, I can show the
importance of this connection and help students understand
diversity."

The "Little
House" books written by Mrs. Wilder, a pioneer girl from Wisconsin, have
long been favorites of school children throughout the world. Mrs. Wilder's connection to
Wisconsin, and the historical context of her books, makes this
program blend well with the Wisconsin elementary
curriculum.

| Additional
Information: |
| The program length
is usually 50 minutes and includes a 30 minute presentation and a
question/answer period. This schedule can be adjusted to
include making butter, which takes about 15 minutes. The
program is flexible and can be changed to meet your schedule.
It works best if
the visit is scheduled after the students have read some of the
stories, as they seem to pay closer attention and relate
better. Some teachers have students write letters asking
Laura questions about things they are interested in. Laura
will include answers to most questions in her presentation if the
letters are received at least 3 days before her visit.
Creative art work to personalize the letters is always welcome.
Supplies for making butter are:
Whipping Cream (chilled), baby food jars, paper towels or napkins,
crackers and plastic knives. Please be sure to indicate your wish to include this activity in your
program on the contact form.

"Pioneer days come to life for students when Laura Ingalls Wilder, played by Pat Day, enters a classroom. Her costume, props, and stories all help students to understand what life was like for the famous author who was born in Wisconsin in 1867. For the past five years we have asked Pat to return to our school for a repeat performance because Laura’s visit is a treasured classroom memory!"
